For experienced riders, week-long cross country riding tours offer unforgettable rides of 4-6 hours daily over spectacular trails with nights spent in comfortable local inns and guest houses. Wicklow is also home to the Bel-Air equestrian centre, one of the longest running equestrian centres in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
An equestrian holiday in Wicklow can also include tuition in dressage, jumping and cross-country riding. Other events include horse shows such as the Tinahely Show, held at the beginning of August, local horse races (point to points) held in January and even hunting with local foxhounds can be arranged in season. Every August the Internationally famous Royal Dublin Society Horse Show, Irelands the biggest annual equestrian is held in Dublin, just a few mile away. For families with small children looking for a unique vacation experience, a gypsy style horse-drawn caravan can be rented by the week for a thorough exploration of the country lanes and villages of Co. Wicklow at a very leisurely pace. The caravans usually accommodate four for eating and sleeping. You can set off on your own to tour at your own pace or join other caravans for the night in designated sites. Campers are responsible for the care and feeding of their caravan horse. |
